NEDSS Solution
(National Electronic Disease Surveillance System)

The National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) project is a public health initiative to provide a standards-based, integrated approach to disease surveillance and to connect public health surveillance to the burgeoning clinical information systems infrastructure. NEDSS will improve the nation's ability to identify and track emerging infectious diseases (including potential bioterrorism attacks), investigate outbreaks, and monitor disease trends.(Source: CDC Website)

The BCS HealthCare NEDSS solution builds on the CDC model and analyzes syndromic surveillance as well as National Notifiable Disease data to provide the state, public, and private health organizations with the proper tools to allow rapid analysis of infectious disease outbreaks and/or bioterrorism events.

Syndromic surveillance monitors disease trends by grouping cases into syndromes rather than specific diagnoses by searching the chief complaint fields from various real time data sources. This effort reduces the impact of bioterrorism attacks more quickly than is currently possible with traditional diagnosis-based surveillance.

National Notifiable Disease investigation utilizes real time data in an effort to expedite reporting and investigation of diseases required by the CDC. Real time reporting provides the Public Health staff with the ability to respond to potential outbreaks more rapidly and thereby reduce the threat of spreading infection.

The BCS HealthCare NEDSS Solution: As outlined in the CDC NEDSS implementation guide (View Guide), the BCS HealthCare NEDSS solution will allow for the:
  • Improvement of the disease reporting system, with more timely and accurate information available for decision making and action.
  • Establishment of a national electronic disease surveillance system able to identify more promptly public health threats with national implications.
  • Integration of information systems currently separated by differences in data formats and codes, and unable to communicate with each other. This integration will provide the ability to pull, edit, and analyze records from different databases in a combined fashion. It will also give authorized users the ability to compare analyses performed on different databases, since the systems will share variable definitions, codes, and grouping rules.
  • Interface with clinical databases (e.g., laboratories, clinics) to make medical information that is valuable for surveillance purposes available in electronic format. This will allow, for example, surveillance programs to receive electronic reports from laboratories or health care providers in a more complete and timely fashion with less burden on the health care sector.
  • Standardization of information technology that can be used across multiple surveillance systems, both in infectious and chronic disease.
  • setup of a centralized data repository for all public health program area systems, which is the basis for the PHIN solution
The BCS HealthCare NEDSS solution meets the functional requirements specified by CDC and integrates with the Health Alert Network (HAN) and local public health systems.
